The Archdiocese of Quito, Ecuador, has announced with profound sorrow the death of Father Maximiliano José Estupinan Gaisbauer, who was found lifeless on Monday, March 23. According to initial information provided by the local Church, all indications are that the priest was murdered in his home, located in the Chaquibamba neighborhood near the town of Guayllabamba.
In the face of this tragedy, Church officials have turned to the Ecuadorian authorities. Under the leadership of the Archbishop of Quito, Most Reverend Alfredo José Espinoza, the archdiocese has formally called for the opening of an investigation that it wishes to be serious, transparent, and swift. The objective is to shed full light on the circumstances of this tragic death, to identify those responsible, and to render justice to the deceased. Pending the conclusions of the police, the faithful have been invited to unite in prayer for the eternal rest of their brother priest, and to implore the Lord to grant strength and consolation to his family, his friends, and all those mourning his loss today.
Affectionately nicknamed "Father Max," Maximiliano José Estupinan Gaisbauer was 64 years old. Born on September 6, 1961, to a German mother, this Ecuadorian priest was ordained on May 20, 2000. The archdiocese wished to pay tribute to a priestly ministry characterized by simple, constant, and profoundly human dedication. His superiors and parishioners remember him as a cordial pastor, endowed with a great capacity for listening and a spirit of accompaniment marked by patience and serenity.
His missionary commitment was expressed through a unique and down-to-earth pastoral style: Father Max would regularly don rubber boots to traverse isolated rural areas, never hesitating to get covered in mud if necessary to bring the Gospel. Throughout his priestly life, he held various responsibilities, serving successively as a formator at the San Luis minor seminary, and as administrator and then pastor of several parishes in Quito. Since 2022, he had also served as chaplain of the Guayllabamba senior center.
The priest's funeral is being organized in two parts to allow the community to pay their final respects. A funeral vigil was held yesterday at 3:00 PM in the San Juan Bautista parish of Cotocollao. The remains will be transferred today to the Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in La Armenia, where a funeral Mass in the presence of the body will be celebrated at 3:00 PM, marking the final farewell of a local Church grieving the violent loss of one of its servants.
