The Catholic Church in France witnessed a remarkable surge in conversions during the most recent Easter Vigil celebrations. According to recently released data, over 21,000 people, both adults and adolescents, received the sacrament of Baptism on the feast of the Resurrection. This figure represents a 20% increase compared to the previous year, confirming a rising trend that continues to strengthen year after year.
This dynamic is part of a constant progression observed over the last two decades. Last year, the country had already recorded a record with 10,384 adult baptisms at Easter. For the year 2026, statistics from the French Bishops' Conference report 21,400 newly baptized individuals, comprising 13,200 adults and 8,200 adolescents who chose to embrace the Catholic faith.
The profile of these new Christians reveals a notable rejuvenation of the Church's base. The majority of converts belong to the 18-25 age group, closely followed by those aged 26-40. Demographically, women represent approximately 62% of the total catechumens. Geographically, the movement is particularly vigorous in the major ecclesiastical jurisdictions: the province of Paris leads with 3,184 baptisms, followed by Marseille with 1,437 and Lyon with 1,200. The report also highlights a particular vitality within the Military Diocese, especially during the military pilgrimage to Lourdes.
Archbishop Olivier de Germay of Lyon, who is responsible for the catechumenate in France, expressed his astonishment at what he calls a "thirst for God." According to the prelate, while the contemporary world struggles more and more to answer humanity's deepest aspirations, the speed and scale of this return to faith constitute a major pastoral challenge. For the Church, the challenge now is to provide adequate accompaniment and solid formation to these new faithful to fully initiate them into Christian life.
To structure this welcome, several initiatives have been launched. In the Île-de-France region, a regional council has been established to set common guidelines until May of next year. Concurrently, bishops have issued new pastoral orientations to strengthen the follow-up of neophytes, including the creation of dedicated services and the organization of specific pilgrimages.
For Archbishop de Germay, this influx of new believers is also a call addressed to long-time faithful. They are invited to recognize, through the witness of the catechumens, the power with which divine grace can arise in an existence to transform it radically.
