The official trailer for Season 5 of The Chosen, titled The Last Supper, was recently unveiled, offering a glimpse of the pivotal events of Holy Week. Among the teased scenes are Jesus's triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the cleansing of the Temple, the betrayal by Judas, and, of course, the Supper, Christ's final meal with His apostles.
This season, divided into three parts, will be screened in theaters starting March 28 for the first part, followed by the second and third parts on April 4 and April 11, respectively. After their theatrical release, the episodes of Season 5 will be available exclusively on Prime Video for 90 days. After this period, they will be accessible for free on the series' dedicated application. Thus, all five seasons of The Chosen will be available on both Prime Video and the app.
In July 2024, CNA had the opportunity to visit the set of The Chosen in Midlothian, Texas, and participate in a press conference where several cast members, including Jonathan Roumie, the actor portraying Jesus, shared their experiences. Roumie spoke candidly about his preparation to embody the crucial moments of Holy Week, particularly the Last Supper and the betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane.
"I get on my knees," he confided, explaining that he spends long hours in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, asking God for the strength necessary to accomplish this immense task. "I ask Him for more strength than I have, and I trust Him, knowing that He has brought me this far, with my struggles, my fears, and my worries. He is there, and I simply have to lay everything at the foot of the altar."
At the time of the interview, Roumie was preparing to film the scenes of the Last Supper and Gethsemane, which he described as "colossal." "I am praying a lot right now, working on these scenes," he added. For the most difficult sequences, he strives to remain fully present in the moment, giving everything he can before feeling immense relief once the scene is finished. However, he acknowledges that the most trying moments are still to come.
When asked about the evolution of his relationship with Jesus since portraying Christ, Roumie replied that the word "deepened" is insufficient to describe the change. "It has brought me to realize that I can do nothing without Jesus, and I am constantly reminded of that," he stated. His daily goal is to seek to live according to Christ's principles and example, while accepting his own limitations. "Aspiring to holiness, failing and falling at every step, but keeping Jesus before me: that is my primary aim."
