The organization has sent a book titled Al servizio della Chiesa ("At the Service of the Church"), published by its own publishing house, to all residential bishops of the peninsula. This volume outlines the theological and canonical foundations which, according to the Fraternity, would justify proceeding with new episcopal consecrations without the prior mandate of the Supreme Pontiff.
This step, accompanied by a cover letter signed by Gabriele D’Avino, marks an evolution in the Fraternity's communication strategy. It addresses directly the institutional heart of the Church in Italy to present what it considers a pastoral and doctrinal necessity, relying on an interpretation that remains contested by many theologians and canonists in full communion with the Holy See.
At the center of the argument developed in this book is the notion of a "survival operation". This concept, initially formulated by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre during the 1988 consecrations carried out without papal authorization, is presented here not as an isolated event of the past, but as a legal and spiritual precedent. For the Fraternity, exceptional circumstances could once again legitimize extraordinary measures to ensure the permanence of what it defines as the integrity of the Catholic tradition.
The work relies on a specific reading of Sacred Scripture, and particularly on the Epistle to the Galatians, to support a "right of resistance to authority". The authors argue that this principle becomes applicable when the transmission of the deposit of faith appears threatened. According to the thesis defended by the Lefebvrist leaders, the current crisis in the Church would not be merely an external phenomenon, but would find its roots within the hierarchy itself. This vision leads the Fraternity to assert that the obligation to protect the received faith can, in certain cases, take precedence over ordinary obedience.
This development occurs within a context of complex and fluctuating relations between the Fraternity and the Apostolic See. Despite periods of rapprochement and partial regularization measures for certain sacramental acts, the canonical status of the FSSPX remains irregular. By collectively addressing the bishops of Italy, the Fraternity appears to want to emerge from its isolation to place its arguments at the center of Church debate, presenting its action as an invitation to a shared path of reflection and study for the good of souls.
However, the scope of this message remains unequivocal for observers: it is a matter of preparing the ground for decisions that would touch the heart of apostolic succession and Church unity. Episcopal consecrations without a papal mandate indeed carry major canonical consequences. In the Catholic world, many voices recall that the end cannot justify such means and that full communion with the successor of Peter, currently Pope Leo XVI, remains the indispensable criterion of ecclesial unity.
The choice of Italy, the historic seat of Christendom, underscores the strategic dimension of this operation. It remains to be seen how the Italian bishops will receive this proposal for dialogue which, while using a measured tone, outlines the contours of a possible new confrontation with Roman authority. The Fraternity is no longer content to justify its past; it is now actively elaborating a framework for future acts that could redefine its ties with Rome.
