The Church of Saint-Epvre, proudly situated at the heart of Sailly-Achâtel, bears witness to nearly three centuries of history. It has endured the trials of major wars without suffering significant damage, but today, a far more insidious adversary threatens its structure: dry rot. This voracious fungus attacks the framework and weakens the building. It was during routine work that the dry rot was discovered. In just a few months, the fungus devoured the load-bearing beams, making the situation critical. Without rapid intervention, the entire edifice risked collapse.
Faced with the scale of the damage, the residents united to save their church. Alain Herbiet, a committed donor, expresses the pride and attachment the villagers feel for this edifice. The church is not just a building; it is a place of worship, of memory, and of gathering.
The cost of the work, estimated at 80,000 euros, far exceeds the means of this municipality of 300 inhabitants. Despite grants obtained and a donation drive via the Heritage Foundation, the town hall must still raise 30,000 euros. For a small municipality, this financial effort is colossal, especially as annual budgetary capacities are limited.
Despite these obstacles, the work is progressing slowly. The villagers hope to reopen their church within a year. Their struggle demonstrates the profound attachment and solidarity needed to preserve a shared heritage, which carries within it essential religious and cultural values.
