The Canadian government, in a new frontal attack against the Catholic Church and defenders of life, is attempting to pass a budget that could annihilate thousands of Catholic charitable works. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) immediately reacted by sending a letter to the federal Minister of Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs, Dominic Leblanc. This letter, dated March 10, denounces the grave consequences of recommendations arising from the government's pre-budget consultations for the 2025 budget.
An Ideological and Hostile Bill Targeting the Christian Faith
Two particularly scandalous recommendations stand out in this proposal. The first (#429) plans to revoke the charitable status of so-called "anti-abortion" associations—that is, all those defending innocent life against the culture of death imposed by the state. The second (#430) seeks to directly amend the Income Tax Act to eliminate the recognition of "the advancement of religion" as a charitable purpose, thus directly targeting the Church and all Christian faith-based organizations.
These attacks clearly demonstrate the current government's relentless pursuit against Christian values and institutions that do not submit to the dominant progressive ideology.
A Crushing Blow Against Catholic Charitable Works
The Canadian bishops remind us that Catholic works are on the front lines of helping the most needy. They manage food banks, welcome the poor, care for the elderly and vulnerable, provide education, and supply hospital care. These services, rendered without distinction of belief, are now threatened by the government's desire to sanction Catholics for their fidelity to the Gospel and their opposition to the culture of death.
Destroying these organizations under the pretext of political ideology is to strike directly at the poorest. The CCCB warns of the catastrophic consequences of these measures which, if adopted, would lead to a drop in donations and the closure of many charitable institutions. Nearly 40% of Canadian charitable organizations are religiously inspired and would find themselves in great difficulty.
An Ideological Dictatorship That No Longer Hides Its Name
This is no longer simply a question of taxation or charity management: it is a premeditated attack against the Catholic Church and Christian morality. The Canadian government is attempting to crush all opposition to its societal agenda by financially suffocating institutions that defend traditional values.
The CCCB's letter denounces this scandalous favoritism towards organizations that conform to the progressive ideology of the ruling power, while seeking to marginalize and eliminate those that remain faithful to their Christian mission.
In addition to violating religious freedom, these measures will have an enormous cost for society. A 2024 study by the Canadian think tank Cardus estimated that the services provided by religious organizations represent $16.5 billion. If they disappear, the burden will fall on taxpayers and already overburdened public services.
A Call to Resistance and Defense of the Faith
The Canadian bishops call on the government to immediately renounce these recommendations, which are nothing less than ideological persecution under the guise of tax reform. They demand a dialogue with federal authorities to protect the fundamental rights of Catholics and all Christian faith-based organizations.
The budget consultation process concluded on March 10, and the Department of Finance is currently studying the reactions. The Canadian Catholic Church will not remain silent in the face of this anti-Christian offensive and calls on all the faithful to mobilize to defend religious freedom and the charitable works threatened by a government hostile to the faith.
