A historic first is taking shape in Southern Africa: Malawi is preparing to experience its very first National Eucharistic Congress from August 5 to 9, 2025. The event will be held at the Our Lady of Africa Cathedral in Lilongwe, under the auspices of the Malawi Catholic Conference of Bishops (MCCB). And this is not just another event: it is a powerful act of faith, rooted in the Jubilee Year of Hope currently being celebrated by the entire universal Church.
According to Father Joseph Sikwese, National Pastoral Coordinator and Deputy Secretary General of the MCCB, the objective is clear: to renew faith, strengthen ecclesial communion, and reaffirm the missionary zeal of the Church. The theme of the congress:
"The Eucharist: Source and Summit for Pilgrims of Hope"
Leaves no doubt about the intention: to draw hearts back to the Eucharist, to Christ truly present, living, and active in the midst of His people.
In an interview granted on July 8 to ACI Africa, Father Sikwese emphasized that this congress, connected to the 2025 Jubilee, should lead the faithful to rediscover the joy of Christian hope. He specified that one of the expected fruits is personal and communal transformation, a rediscovery of the beauty of Eucharistic adoration, and a renewal of missionary zeal.
What is striking in these preparations is the scale of the mobilization. The clergy is not alone in this endeavor. The organizing committee is largely composed of laypeople, and young Catholics are at the forefront of the coordination. Every parish in the country is engaged in a dynamic of Eucharistic catechesis and weekly adoration, to firmly root the centrality of the Blessed Sacrament in hearts.
Catholic media, both radio and television, are also placing themselves at the service of this spiritual momentum, broadcasting special programs related to the congress, with a particular effort to reach the youth.
The ambition is beautiful and profound: that participants return to their communities renewed in their faith, and determined to live and transmit the transformative power of the Eucharist in daily life. The event will not be a mere liturgical celebration, but a missionary turning point for the Church in Malawi, in a spirit of solidarity with the poorest and communion in hope.
