On September 27, 1988, the Catholic Church lost one of its most devoted servants, Archbishop Teofilo Camomot, in a tragic road accident in San Fernando, Cebu, Philippines.
A Life Devoted to God and the Church
Teofilo Camomot was born on March 3, 1914, in Carcar, Cebu, into a deeply Catholic family. From a young age, he was immersed in a religious atmosphere, which shaped his future vocation. After completing his elementary studies, Camomot felt God's call and decided to enter the seminary. Ordained a priest on December 14, 1941, he consecrated his life to God and the Church, first serving as a parish priest in various parishes before becoming auxiliary bishop of Jaro in 1955.
A Bishop in Service to the Poorest
In 1955, Camomot was appointed auxiliary bishop of Jaro, Iloilo. Despite the responsibilities of his office, he never ceased to serve the poorest and most needy. His great charity led him to divest himself of everything to help those most in need. It is even reported that he pawned his pectoral cross to offer financial support to the destitute. His life was marked by profound simplicity and total self-denial.
In 1959, he was appointed coadjutor of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, where he continued to devote himself to his pastoral ministry. Bishop Camomot was also known for founding several religious congregations, such as the Paulinian Defenders of the Faith and the Tertiary Carmelites of the Holy Eucharist, works that continue to bear spiritual fruit today.
A Man of Prayer and Miracles
Bishop Camomot was a man of intense prayer. Despite his reserved nature, he spent hours in prayer, particularly in the confessional, where he offered God's forgiveness and mercy to those who came for confession. His spiritual life was marked by unwavering devotion to the Virgin Mary and the Eucharist.
Testimonies also report extraordinary phenomena associated with his life, including cases of bilocation, where he was reportedly seen in two different places at the same time. One such account, authenticated by Cardinal Ricardo Jamin Vidal, recounts that he was present at a consultation meeting while simultaneously administering the last sacraments to a dying person in a remote village.
Bishop Camomot also participated in the Second Vatican Council, one of the most important events in the modern history of the Catholic Church. As a bishop, he took part in this ecclesial gathering held between 1962 and 1965, alongside many other prelates from around the world.
Although Bishop Camomot was known for his modesty and humility, his participation in the Second Vatican Council testifies to his commitment to the spiritual and pastoral renewal of the Church. His presence at this event underscores his fidelity to the Church and his desire to contribute to the adaptation of the Church's teachings to contemporary realities, while remaining deeply rooted in Catholic tradition.

On September 27, 1988, Bishop Camomot tragically lost his life in a car accident while returning from a visit to a Carmelite monastery. His death left an immense void in the hearts of those who knew him. His burial site, located in Carcar, has become a place of pilgrimage where many faithful come to pray, especially on his birth and death anniversaries.
In 2010, an official request was submitted for the opening of his cause for beatification and canonization. On May 21, 2022, Pope Francis officially recognized the heroic virtues of Bishop Camomot, declaring him Venerable. This title is a recognition of his life of holiness and his total devotion to God. If a miracle is attributed to his intercession, he can be beatified, and another miracle would lead to his canonization.
