Walter of Pontoise was not a man of power, but a man of God. A brilliant professor who became an abbot by royal order in the 11th century, he ceaselessly fled his responsibilities to seek solitude and prayer. He escaped the walls of his abbey, hid on the islands of the Loire, fled all the way to Rome to beg Pope Gregory VII to relieve him of his mission. But the Sovereign Pontiff's response was a heroic call to order: "Return to your post and obey." Walter returned to Pontoise to confront the corruption of his own brothers, enduring beatings and imprisonment without ever weakening. He is the last saint canonized by a local authority before the Papacy reserved that privilege exclusively. A model of discipline for our time.
