The rich man has no name in the Gospel, for his name is erased from the Book of Life. He is the mirror of our modernity: saturated with consumption, clothed in technology, but incapable of seeing the Lazarus who is dying of spiritual hunger at his gate. The chasm of which Abraham speaks in this passage is already dug here below! Every time we silence the Truth so as not to offend the world, we dig this eternal ditch.
Translation for our time: if you refuse to listen to the Magisterium and Tradition of the Church, no viral video will save you! Conversion requires total submission to revealed Truth.
Saint of the Day: Saint Virgilius of Arles, the Combatant Monk
To confront this world, we need the spirit of the builders. Born in Aquitaine in the 6th century, Saint Virgilius of Arles was an authentic son of Saint Benedict. Becoming archbishop of a city ravaged by plague, he did not give up. His response? Construction and spiritual combat!
He rebuilt the cathedral, reformed morals, and fought fiercely against simony. Pope Saint Gregory the Great made him his vicar for all of Gaul, thus becoming "the eye of Rome." In these times when some would like to make the Church "transparent" and invisible, Saint Virgilius cries out to us from the height of his bell tower that our faith must be incarnated in stone, in law, and in the conquest of souls.
